EU transport policy formally anchored rail freight as one of the cornerstones of the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, setting ambitious targets such as “rail freight traffic will increase by 50% by 2030 and double by 2050.”
And yet the modal share of rail freight does not seem to be growing as desired in the past years. Why is that? Do we have a full understanding of the possible blocking or delaying points? And do we have the data/tools to even estimate the real growth potential of rail freight traffic?
