Maintenance, heavy maintenance

Activity aiming to maintain something in good working order, prevent operational disturbance and/or uphold a given technical standard. EU definition (DIRECTIVE 2016/797/EU): 'The procedures, associated equipment, logistics centres for maintenance work and reserves allowing the mandatory corrective and preventive maintenance to ensure the interoperability of the rail system and guarantee the performance required.' EU definition (DIRECTIVE 2012/34/EU, recast) of 'heavy maintenance': 'means work that is not carried out routinely as part of day-to-day operations and requires the vehicle to be removed from service.'
