Decomposition

This critical event concerns only solid substances. It corresponds to a change of chemical state of the substance (loss of physical integrity) by action of an energy/heat source or by reaction with a chemical substance (incompatible reagent). The decomposition of the substance leads, as secondary and tertiary critical events, to an emission of toxic products or to a delayed explosion following formation of flammable gas. This critical event concerns only mass solid storage.
