ERA is happy to share a new report showcasing the results of the pilot project “Single European Railway Area - Prototype Corridor Munich-Verona”, supported by the European Commission. Led Coordinated by KombiConsult GmbH and carried out within the Brenner Corridor Platform (BCP), the project focused on finding practical solutions to improve cross-border rail operations between Munich and Verona - one of Europe’s key transport axes.

Since 2007, the BCP has brought together Member States, Regions, Infrastructure Managers, the Brenner Base Tunnel SE, ERA and the European Commission to help turn a shared vision into reality: making cross-border rail transport as seamless and efficient as possible, both for freight and passengers.

This pilot tackled four operational challenges identified as priorities by the BCP Working Group on Interoperability & Operation:

  1. Brake calculation
  2. Technical checks at the border
  3. Second person in the driver’s cabin
  4. Harmonisation of train operating rules

These topics were studied to find solutions that work not just for the Brenner corridor, but potentially for other border sections in Europe too. The report outlines what was done, what was learned, and what’s recommended next.

Check out the full report and see how these findings could help shape a more connected and efficient European rail system.
