ERA: 20 Years of Empowering European Railways
2004-2024: this year marks the 20th anniversary of the European Union Agency for Railways. Find on this page documents specially crafted to celebrate this milestone.
For two decades, the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) has been at the forefront of transforming Europe's railway landscape. With a team of 200 dedicated professionals representing 23 nationalities, ERA has been instrumental in advancing the vision of a sustainable and safe railway system without borders.
Mandated to issue vehicle authorisations, single safety certificates, and to grant ERTMS Trackside approvals since June 2019, and encouraged by the results obtained, ERA has a clear vision of what the future of European railways shall look like. Railways must be connected, efficient, interoperable across borders and language barriers, with a focus on end-user satisfaction, environmentally sustainable, and innovative.
By leveraging its expertise and scale effect, ERA will continue to play a crucial role in integrating European railway systems, making trains safer and facilitating seamless cross-border operations.
