Heavy rail infrastructure

Heavy rail infrastructure, by opposition to “light rail infrastructure”, is formed of any part of the infrastructure included in Union’s network, which falls in the scope defined in Article 1(3) of Directive (EU) 2016/797, i.e. any infrastructure not used by metros, not functionally separate from the rest of the Union rail system and not exclusively used by trams and light rail vehicles as defined in Article 2 (29) of Directive (EU) 2016/797. Article 2 of Directive (EU) 2016/797 defines light rail vehicles according to technical criteria regarding crashworthiness and strength of vehicle.
