Michel Van Liefferinge gained a Telecommunication Engineering degree and started his career in 1981 in the field of Speech and Digital Signal Processing. In 1989, Michel joined Gec-Alsthom ACEC Transport and developed his Railways Signalling expertise . From 1992 to March 2011, he took over a number of management positions within Alstom Transport Signalling, leading the Alstom development and roll-out of ERTMS.  Since April 2011, he is working as senior consultant. Acting as UNISIG General Manager for UNIFE until 2021, he is currently providing expertise to SNCF Réseau and the ERTMS Users Group.  

ETCS System Compatibility (ESC) : state of play and next steps

In 2023, the ERTMS Users Group launched a survey among their Members to collect the return of experience of the ETCS System Compatibility (ESC) testing process. This analysis included the inputs from UNISIG and some RUs. The presentation will report the lessons learned following the implementation of ESC and explore the possible ways forward, especially in view of the ERA report about the future of ESC to be published in June 2024.
