Collaborating with Haropa Port in the framework of an ERA study on rail-port synergies, the Agency set Le Havre as the location for an informed discussion on multimodal freight. Stakeholders from European and national politics, rail and shipping industries, national safety authorities discussed current state and future possibilities of European multimodal freight as means to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emission.
Different European ports highlighted the importance of rail connectivity for their competitiveness. In general, investment in rail infrastructure as means to connect with EU hinterland is seen as key sustainability criteria for investment, as confirmed by the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The full report of the conference will be included in the ERA study “Fostering the Railway Sector through the European Green Deal: Rail-Port Synergies”, which will soon be published on our website.
