A common framework for railway safety is necessary for establishing an effective single market for rail transport services. The Safety Unit strives to Develop, promote and monitor a common EU approach to safety management and governance across our stakeholders in order to make the railway system work better.
To achieve this key objective, the Safety Unit has three key sectors (teams) who deal with the following:
- The Management Systems Sector which develops, promotes and monitors new or existing harmonized approaches towards risk control across the railway sector organisations.
- The Supervision and Investigation sector which develops, promotes and monitors new or existing harmonized approaches towards risk control across the regulatory bodies (National Safety Authorities and National Investigation Bodies).
- The Regulation and Safety Monitoring sector which develops promotes and monitors new or existing harmonized approaches towards risk control at EU level.
