Welcome to the Safety Management Systems (SMS) website

 

 

The Safety Management System (SMS) plays a central role in the EU safety regulatory framework and is a cornerstone of the safety of the railway system in the EU. Designing and implementing an accurate SMS is a challenging task for the railway companies: Railway Undertakings (RUs) and Infrastructure Managers (IMs).

The purpose of this website is to support, through practical advice and suggestions, the design, implementation and delivery of a structured and organisation-wide railway SMS. 
 
These pages reflect the effort to present an emerging view on this dynamic and important subject through a user-friendly tool, “The SMS wheel”, allowing the navigation to all single SMS elements.

This tool is based on a set of documents, developed by the ERA together with relevant stakeholders for the railway companies. The SMS wheel offers a comprehensive picture of all the requirements and elements of a SMS, such as listed in Article 9 and Annex III of the Railway Safety Directive.

At the same time, this pages pretend to facilitate the compliance with the legal requirements that are according to the Railway Safety Directive and in all other railway safety related legislation in force.
