In recent years, on average one person has been killed and close to one seriously injured at level crossings in Europe every day. Level crossing accidents represent more than one fourth of significant accidents; level crossing casualties account for more than one fourth of all casualties in railway sector.
The Agency monitors and analyses safety levels at level crossings in all Member States and work with the national authorities to reduce current risk levels. The risk at level crossing is subject to annual assessment of common safety targets (CSTs) by the Agency.
The Agency also analyses accident investigation reports submitted by the National Investigation Bodies (NIBs) into the ERADIS database.
