The Safety Management System has a central role in the EU safety regulatory framework and is a cornerstone of the safety of the railway system in the EU. The SMS wheel offers a comprehensive view of all the requirements and elements of an SMS, such as listed in Article 9 and Annex III of the Railway Safety Directive.
 
In order to provide further assistance to the railway undertakings and infrastructure managers in designing and implementing their SMS, the European Railway Agency has now published a dedicated website on Safety Management Systems (SMS) having the SMS Wheel to display all SMS' aspects, including all related documents and information. The website represents the evolution of the SMS guidance documents and their related information that are periodically updated by ERA.
